SpyParty Interview – PAX 2010

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

During PAX there was one indie game I was really looking forward to, and from the moment I entered the show, it had tons of people lining up to play. The game, SpyParty, is being independently made by industry veteran Chris Hecker. Hecker has an impressive resume, including been a major part of the development of Spore, and he’s putting that expertise into this fascinating title. I was able to schedule an interview with him during his very busy schedule.

Mark Godec: So I couldn’t help but notice you are handing out pamphlets on how to play. It seems like SpyParty is really complicated.

Chris Hecker: Accessibility is the preeminent thing people go for these days, and I’m trying to go for as much depth as possible first. A big inspirational game for me is Counterstrike. I haven’t played it for years, but when I did, I played a hundred million hours of it. That level of replayability and intense player skill is what I want, where it’s like, if I’m way better then you, you will never win. You can deal with that later with matchmaking and handicapping. You want that raw almost e-sports level of player skills because that’s what makes for replayability. Because you feel like you’re getting better. We’ve had people come back five times. Enough people have been standing in line and coming back we are going to have an experienced players tournament tomorrow. Eventually, I will make it more accessible with handicapping and gadgets. During PAX I had the opportunity to speak with David Gaider. If you didn’t know, David Gaider is the Head Writer of Dragon Age, he’s written two books set in the DA universe and has been working on DA2. He gave me a deeper look at what’s to come in Dragon Age 2. I know I’m excited to see the game.

Guild Wars 2 – Jeff Grubb Interview – PAX 2010

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

At PAX, I got to meet with Guild Wars designer and co-author of the book, Ghosts of Ascalon, Jeff Grubb.  The Guild Wars 2 booth was crawling with fans waiting to play the demo (which I’ll talk about in the days to come), standing in line for t-shirts, or watching their friends beat on a giant dragon with other demo players.

The Lord of the Rings Online – Pax 2010

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Turbine’s The Lord of the Rings Online has recently taken the leap into free-to-play territory, following the success of Dungeons and Dragons Online, which went free-to-play a year ago, garnering it two million new players.  LotRO executive producer, Aaron Campbell, expects the same results come September 10th when the MMO based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s highly popular trilogy drops its mandatory monthly fee.

Aion: Assault on Balaurea – PAX 2010

Monday, September 6th, 2010

I checked out Aion’s new expansion on Friday and spoke with an NCSoft representative about some of the new features it will bring to the game as well as any updates that will apply to the game as a whole. Aion: Assault on Balaurea adds a new area to the Aion world, Balaurea, where the Balaur reside, is the surface of the planet where players will be able to explore and fight against the invading Balaur. With this new area, Aion also gets eight new instances, as well as three solo instances (one for level eighteens), a new level cap (up from 50 to 55), and pets.

PAX Day 1

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Hey Gamezombie readers, this is Mark Godec, and we just finished the first day of PAX. We saw a lot of cool stuff on the exhibit hall, and have gotten a lot of good interviews and video.

Off the top of my head we are going to have more extensive articles about Guild Wars 2, Aion, Epic Mickey, Dragon Age 2, and Duke Nukem Forever(I know, we were surprised too).

More detailed articles coming after we are not busy running around.
