2010: This Year in Gaming

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

Another year has passed, and what do we all remember from the gaming world? It’s pretty tough to put a finger on one defining moment this year for two reasons. One, there weren’t any jaw-dropping ZOMG!1!! headlines. Secondly, there were A LOT of very solid, polished, titles to choose from this year. I don’t believe there was anything in particular that revolutionized the industry, but there were plenty of juicy, new titles to pick and choose from. Here are a few of the major happenings of 2010:

Infinity Ward and Activision Fallout

Activision and Infinity Ward had quite the playground brawl this year. According to G4TV, a lawsuit of thirty-eight people from Infinity Ward was filed to sue Activision for not paying royalties. The suit was filed from anywhere between 75-500 million dollars. Activision spokesman Dan Amrich stated that employees who stay with Activision will have a bigger bonus due to the departure of these employees. The fallout may have been frightening to CoD fans, but I don’t believe there is anything to worry about. As far as Activision holding money as ransom, it almost appears they were acting as financial terrorists, bribing employees to stay for a bigger bonus. So much for integrity. (more…)

Call of Duty: Black Ops Review

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

Upon the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops, multiple records were shattered. No, it wasn’t the amount of controllers I’ve broken or deaths in a match. The sales estimate in the United States and UK is around $360 million. This broke the sale for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which had an opening day estimate of $310 million. The retail support of the game also had a huge day. There were over ten thousand midnight releases of the game. Treyarch’s game obviously worked from the success of Modern Warfare, but also adds a new unique style to the franchise. Opening day successes such as these are built over a long period of time. The sales are founded on consumer trust, as long as the game promises to deliver what made it a hit before. Consumers look for the same functionality and smoothness in previous titles, but also look for a more riveting campaign and more multiplayer options. Every fan of the franchise can relate to the late, LATE, nights of multiplayer destruction. Gamers have been witnesses to the competitive playground Call of Duty has offered, but how can Treyarch step up to the hype this time around?

As you begin the game you start off as the soldier Alex Mason. You are being interrogated for information that you cannot remember. Some of this can get pretty gruesome, but there is a “brutality” function that tones down the cut scenes and changes the story just a tad for a less intense experience. (more…)

Call of Weedy-

Sorry I’m a day late my gamer friends…I’ve been a bit busy lately.

So I’ve been playing Call of Duty lately and I’ve got a bone to pick with the developers.  It seems like half of the people that I play with now have something on their character that has to do with marijuana.  What the hell is this for?  What is this teaching kids?  Weed is cool?  You get a pot leaf as an achievement?  Come on now Infinity Ward.  This shit is not right.
