What Makes Bowser so Persistent?

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

While watching the Super Mario Bros. Supershow I was wondering, “What the hell keeps Bowser going in his quest to snag Princess Peach?” In that series she is completely incapable of doing anything more than repeating what Mario and Luigi say. Where is the interest in someone who seems to be completely ignorant of anything in the way of defense budgeting or any kind of military buildup to support her kingdom, but instead relies on what can only be considered the equivalent of swatting her hand at Bowser saying, “don’t touch me.”

Or she just uses a lackey as a meat shield.

I figured it out with a comment Baby Bowser made in Super Mario Sunshine when he called Peach “mama.” I know that by the end of the game Bowser tells his son that Peach isn’t really his mother and the little one agrees with him, but denial is also one of the stages of grief, and I’m sure that they both practiced it on that occasion. The real answer is that Baby Bowser is actually the spawn of Peach and Bowser and he continuously invades the Mushroom Kingdom in an effort to get the child support that he needs to enable a comfortable lifestyle for his child all because Peach refuses to pay.

Super Mario Madness: Epilogue

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

So in apology for this nonsense, I’d like to present you guys with a Mario animation from Japan that doesn’t make you want to drink yourselves into oblivion.

Western Show on Super Mario Brothers

I dare you to not bounce along to it. I DARE you.

On that note, should you decide to watch the Mario anime I just spent a few weeks watching, the source is here. It’s more mind-boggling in motion.

Super Mario Madness part 5: Prince of the Non Sequitors

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

And so we come to what I hope is the end of this bizarre romp through 1986 video game lore. I pray that we reach the end.

Steel yourselves, my friend. This is going to take a while. (more…)

Super Mario Madness Part 4: Panting Underwater

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

So. Let’s review.

Mario and Luigi, fairly innocuous grocery-store-owners at the edge of a wasteland, are pulled from their world into what I assume is the Mushroom Kingdom, somehow connected to Mario’s Famicom. There they learn that they are famous there for being the Guys on the Ramen Cups, and that only they can rescue Princess Peach from the evil Bowser’s clutches.

Why?

Shut up, that’s why. (more…)

Super Mario Madness Part 3: Super Ramen Guy

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

So I may have mentioned last time that Part 3 would be the final installment. And I’ll be honest, I lied. There’s just far too much content, too much insanity for me to squeeze it into a third post. But I endure, dear friends, and so shall you. Hopefully the next installment will be the final one, but I make no promises. There’s some underwater physics that get ignored in what will be Part 4 that, frankly, I just can’t handle. It may devolve into incoherent ranting. Naughty words may be screamed by a frothing mouth.

I’m just…I’m just warning you. It doesn’t get any better.

Super Mario Madness: Part 2- Mushroom Boogaloo

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

You thought it was over, didn’t you.

Oh, how I wish it was.

No, my friends, I assure you, this rabbit hole goes so much deeper. And we’re going to see this through to the end, so help me God.

Super Mario Madness: Part 1

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

So I was poking around the internet, trying to find something to write about for this column. I started thinking about the Super Mario Bros. movie (which I’ll probably discuss in a later post), and in the process, discovered something that may actually be far more insane.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you “Super Mario Bothers: Peach-Hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen,” a.k.a., “Super Mario Brothers: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach.”
