Quite often our beloved video games heroes are accompanied by faithful sidekicks. Link had the annoying, yet ever helpful Navi. Banjo would never have been able to save his little sister without Kazooie. Even Solid Snake depends on Otacon for advice. Sidekicks are everywhere; Tails and Sonic, Daxtar and Jak, and Diddy Kong and Donkey Kong. But what about the villains? Sure, the bad guys have countless minions to throw out at our heroes, but sometimes even villains need loyal back up. It’s time these devoted henchmen receive the recognition they deserve.
10. Harry Flynn from Uncharted 2
Besides having a devilishly brilliant British voice (Steve Valentine), Harry Flynn is a picture perfect henchman. And, sadly, like most henchmen, Harry doesn’t make it to the end of the game–although he did come close. Harry originally comes off as a smooth talking protagonist, much like Nathan Drake, but don’t be fooled. Harry Flynn would probably backstab his mother if he had to. Flynn quickly turns into–to put it nicely–a jerk and the model henchmen for any crazy Russian treasure hunter.
9. Team Rocket from Pokemon
The iconic team rocket is the bane of Pokemon trainers everywhere. In the big scheme of things though, Team Rockets aren’t the main villains. The evil doers put their poke-skills to work for bad guy Giovanni. Even if you don’t know much about Pokemon, you will probably recognize the most famous of Team Rockets: Jesse and James. However, Jesse and James aren’t the most competent henchmen in the world of bad guys no matter how hard they try. Not only do they make trouble for trainers, but they make it double! They don’t protect the world from devastation or unite the people in any nation. (more…)

10. “Rolling Starâ€â€”Katamari Forever
You may have never heard of this song if you’ve never played Katamari, but I highly recommend that you look it up because, despite the fact that it will probably get stuck in your head too, it will make you laugh. The lyrics are just ridiculous, and the tune itself is terribly catchy. I challenge you to look this one up on YouTube and take a listen.
9. “Green Hill Zoneâ€â€”Sonic the Hedgehog
This is the first of a few songs on this list that have been derived from older 8-bit or 16-bit games, and there is a reason for this: these songs have a very distinct sound because of their bleeps and bloops that make it very easy for the tunes to become ingrained in your head. This song is a classic for any Sonic fan, and the patterns within the music just make it so catchy that you’ll end up thinking about it hours after you’ve played a good, nostalgic round of Sonic. Nintendo is rich as hell. Â That’s just a fact, the Wii and the DS have outsold the competition by far. Â That’s why we’re seeing Sony and Microsoft releasing this new motion control peripheral for their systems- because they want some of that there Nintendo money. Â The thing is, I would argue that the motion control isn’t necessarily the thing that is causing Nintendo’s success; rather, I would say that what Nintendo has going for it is a greater emphasis on multiplayer.
Now, allow me to make a clarifying statement here. Â Nintendo has almost no real online support for its videogames. In fact, they just don’t really have any support for it at all, and that does piss me off, but what Nintendo does have is local multiplayer.
Local multiplayer is awesome, and it sells games. Â Seriously, what’s more fun, pwning random nubs on X-box live while some 12 year old Korean kid berates your skills and electronically humps your dead body, or pwning your friends while electronically making love to their corpse while they sit next to you trying to keep their dignity and curse you? Â I don’t know about you but I find necrophilia so much more appealing when I can actually look into the eyes of the nub who I just freakin’ owned and giggle childishly at.

While watching the Super Mario Bros. Supershow I was wondering, “What the hell keeps Bowser going in his quest to snag Princess Peach?†In that series she is completely incapable of doing anything more than repeating what Mario and Luigi say. Where is the interest in someone who seems to be completely ignorant of anything in the way of defense budgeting or any kind of military buildup to support her kingdom, but instead relies on what can only be considered the equivalent of swatting her hand at Bowser saying, “don’t touch me.â€

Or she just uses a lackey as a meat shield.
I figured it out with a comment Baby Bowser made in Super Mario Sunshine when he called Peach “mama.†I know that by the end of the game Bowser tells his son that Peach isn’t really his mother and the little one agrees with him, but denial is also one of the stages of grief, and I’m sure that they both practiced it on that occasion. The real answer is that Baby Bowser is actually the spawn of Peach and Bowser and he continuously invades the Mushroom Kingdom in an effort to get the child support that he needs to enable a comfortable lifestyle for his child all because Peach refuses to pay.

Â

He just said what he thought, and he's probably right.
Â
In 2009 the video game industry took a dip in sales. Even Nintendo felt the effect of the slump as their sales had dropped as compared to the previous year, but what can we blame it on? Shigeru Miyamoto seems to think that the fault lies within the industry.
Miyamoto said quite bluntly, “The fact that in 2009 we were not able to sell more than we did in 2008 was simply that in comparison, we were not able to produce fun-enough products.” I find this to be a breath of fresh air because at least somebody is thinking that it might be their fault instead of mindlessly blaming economic downturn for their troubles. I’m just happy to see somebody placing blame that also directly implicates them as well.Â

So in apology for this nonsense, I’d like to present you guys with a Mario animation from Japan that doesn’t make you want to drink yourselves into oblivion.
Western Show on Super Mario Brothers
I dare you to not bounce along to it. I DARE you.
On that note, should you decide to watch the Mario anime I just spent a few weeks watching, the source is here. It’s more mind-boggling in motion.

And so we come to what I hope is the end of this bizarre romp through 1986 video game lore. I pray that we reach the end.
Steel yourselves, my friend. This is going to take a while. (more…)

So. Let’s review.
Mario and Luigi, fairly innocuous grocery-store-owners at the edge of a wasteland, are pulled from their world into what I assume is the Mushroom Kingdom, somehow connected to Mario’s Famicom. There they learn that they are famous there for being the Guys on the Ramen Cups, and that only they can rescue Princess Peach from the evil Bowser’s clutches.
Why?
Shut up, that’s why. (more…)

So I may have mentioned last time that Part 3 would be the final installment. And I’ll be honest, I lied. There’s just far too much content, too much insanity for me to squeeze it into a third post. But I endure, dear friends, and so shall you. Hopefully the next installment will be the final one, but I make no promises. There’s some underwater physics that get ignored in what will be Part 4 that, frankly, I just can’t handle. It may devolve into incoherent ranting. Naughty words may be screamed by a frothing mouth.
I’m just…I’m just warning you. It doesn’t get any better.

You thought it was over, didn’t you.
Oh, how I wish it was.
No, my friends, I assure you, this rabbit hole goes so much deeper. And we’re going to see this through to the end, so help me God.
