PAX East had plenty of games available for viewing, playing, and gushing over. One of the many games I took a look at was D3 Publisher’s Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, which had many interesting features. Here’s the transcript from the audio interview, where I interviewed Brian, one of the publishers, who played through the demo while I asked questions.
Tyler Thomas (TT): So, what are we taking a look at here?
Brian: We are looking at Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddeon, coming out for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, July 5th, 2011, at $39.95…
TT: Nice, I like that.
Brian: …Yeah, it’s the same price as 2017. So, basically, it’s the spiritual follow-up to Earth Defense Force: 2017.
TT: Very cool.
Brian: Yeah, so you’re playing as a series of characters in Strike Force Lightning, and…the thing about them is that they’re the elite of the elite of the EDF. They’ve got four upgradeable armor types, and unlike 2017, they’re more robust, they’ve got some more firepower to them, and like I said, they’re upgradeable, too. For example, I’m playing with the Battle Armor.
TT: So, what does the Battle Armor have?
Brian: Well, the Battle Armor’s got a shield to block enemy damage…
TT: That’s handy, that’s very nice.
Brian: Yeah, the cool thing is that you can shoot an explosive at your feet and absorb the damage, instead of taking damage. (more…)

At a time when a new wave of handhelds is about to breach the market, I feel it necessary to assess the situation. Within the last year, we’ve been informed that Sony’s releasing the new Next Generation Portable (NGP, “PSP2â€) and, of course, Nintendo is slated to release the 3DS this March-this is all just too fast for us, right? Right?! Like I said, we need to assess the situation. Which one is the Average Joe (That’s right, we’re a proper noun population) going to get the most bang for their buck for? Which handheld’s going to offer us the best experience? Well, it may not be much, but here’s a few areas where I believe a deciding factor may be found:

Killzone 3: Multiplayer Open Beta – Impressions
(Guerrilla Games, PS3, Release: Feb 22, 11)
It’s been almost a full two years since Guerrilla Games brought us to the dismal world of Helghan in Killzone 2. Being one of the only PS3 exclusive FPSes, it had a lot of high hopes and expectations attached to it. And, while it didn’t meet all of them, Guerrilla gave us PS3 owners a rock-solid FPS with a gorgeous presentation and tight, albeit unwieldy, controls. Whether Killzone 3 fixes all of these blemishes remains to be seen, but if its multiplayer beta (currently underway) is any indication, shooter fans will not be disappointed. (more…)

“Formation! Formation!†Jes Richards, lead editor, yells and although my team takes our formation, we’re still shouting out directions. We’re riding cute bunnies one moment, then we’re on a laser camel, and then we’re flying bees through quickly moving obstacle courses. We’re throwing jelly pastries at crazy machines and running from guard turkeys. GameZombie staff members watch us, laughing, and ask, “Is that really a laser camel?†Yes. Yes it is a laser camel.
LittleBigPlanet 2 is full of adorably creative characters, environments, and gameplay. New zones are preceded and finished by quirky cutscenes in which your sack avatar is seen trying to save Craft World. This time around, there is actual voice acting, not just the gibberish mumbles spoken during gameplay, and it’s very well done. The cast of characters will follow you from zone to zone, not just appear for one level and disappear. It’s beautifully weird and silly, and quite appropriate for the narrative of such an imagination-themed game.
New gameplay mechanics, such as a grappler, have also been added to enliven the static formula of simple platforming. Not to mention entirely new genres of gameplay have been added. While there is still solid platforming, LittleBigPlanet 2 is full of 2D side-scrolling shooters and engaging puzzles. Unlike the first game, LittleBigPlanet 2’s action doesn’t become dull by dragging out constant platforming. There is more variety and new content to keep the player’s attention. Hidden stickers and objects are still in play for those who revel in achievements and completing levels to a 100%, adding a great deal of replay value to the basic game. (more…)

PORTAL 2 PLAYSTATION 3 STEAM FEATURES REVEALED
January 18, 2011 — Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the Steam features shipping with the PlayStation 3 (PS3) version of Portal 2.
Marking the debut of Steam functioning on any next generation console, the features shipping in the PS3 version of Portal 2 include cross platform play (PC/Mac vs. PS3) for multiplayer games, persistent cloud-based storage of PS3 saved games, and cross platform chat (PC/Mac and PS3).
In addition, those who purchase Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 may unlock a Steam Play (PC & Mac) copy of Portal 2 at no additional cost by linking their PSN and Steam accounts.
“We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product,” said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. “Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases.”
“We designed the Portal 2 PS3 experience to be very straightforward for gamers,” said Josh Weier, project lead on Portal 2 at Valve. “PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-Ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites.”
These features are made possible thru the use of Steam, Valve’s platform for the delivery and management of games and digital content.
Portal 2 is due for release on the PlayStation 3, PC, Mac and Xbox 360 this April.

Another year has passed, and what do we all remember from the gaming world? It’s pretty tough to put a finger on one defining moment this year for two reasons. One, there weren’t any jaw-dropping ZOMG!1!! headlines. Secondly, there were A LOT of very solid, polished, titles to choose from this year. I don’t believe there was anything in particular that revolutionized the industry, but there were plenty of juicy, new titles to pick and choose from. Here are a few of the major happenings of 2010:
Infinity Ward and Activision Fallout
Activision and Infinity Ward had quite the playground brawl this year. According to G4TV, a lawsuit of thirty-eight people from Infinity Ward was filed to sue Activision for not paying royalties. The suit was filed from anywhere between 75-500 million dollars. Activision spokesman Dan Amrich stated that employees who stay with Activision will have a bigger bonus due to the departure of these employees. The fallout may have been frightening to CoD fans, but I don’t believe there is anything to worry about. As far as Activision holding money as ransom, it almost appears they were acting as financial terrorists, bribing employees to stay for a bigger bonus. So much for integrity. (more…)

Since E3 is over I was left wondering what the best things I saw on the floor were. Everyone had impressive showings and I enjoyed them immensely, but some stood out way more than others. Here are my top 5 picks for the best of E3.
5.Child of Eden

This was a game that was both trippy and amazingly fun to watch. Manipulating shapes, sounds, and colors with merely a flick of the wrist was one of the most appealing things about the game. This game showed what could happen when a rail shooter comes in contact with the Kinect technology. It was a thrill ride for the senses that was engaging from start to finish. What else would you expect from the people that brought us Rez?

Rockstar Games has announced the first DLC that will be available for Red Dead Redemption just a month after the title’s release. The Outlaws to the End Co-Op Mission Pack drops on June 22nd to both Xbox 360 and PS3 owners for the low price of Free.99. Check out the press release for details and screens:
The Outlaws to the End Co-Op Mission Pack will feature six all-new cooperative multiplayer missions to play with 2-4 players. This will be a completely free download that we will have ready for you to download and play at some time in June.
These six explosive and epic missions will play out across the game world, including:
“Walton’s Goldâ€
Walton’s Gang have taken control of a mining camp rich with gold. Fight through the camp and load your mine cart with as much gold as you can carry and get out as fast as you can – Walton’s boys have rigged the place to blow!
“The Riverâ€
Ride a raft down river, taking out rebel encampments along the way until you reach the rebel stronghold of Nosalida and a final epic battle for the town’s massive weapons caches. Watch out for Gatling gun-equipped enemy rafts.
“Ammunitionâ€
The Mexican Army has the town of Tesoro Azul under siege. Storm the gates under heavy cannon, Gatling gun and sniper fire to destroy the Mexican artillery placements.
Plus three more missions to be revealed in detail soon.
The Outlaws to the End Co-Op Mission Pack will also yield additional multiplayer XP rewards, and brand new Achievements/Trophies to unlock.
Screens:

Taking back the town of Tesoro Azul in "Ammunition".

Engaging the Walton Gang from an advantageous elevated position in "Walton's Gold".

Heading downstream towards the rebel stronghold of Nosalida in "The River".
By the looks of it, Rockstar is putting just as much effort into developing the multiplayer element of Red Dead as they have in the single-player.
