This was one of the best articles I've read about SWTOR's PVP system Josh! Also Stryker's comment was spot on IMO.

This is the make-it-or-break-it time for TOR as many players are now hitting the level 50 cap and will be entering the PVP arena and operations. BW will have to pull out every stop to improve the issues you guys have mentioned or they run the risk of bleeding a LOT of subscriptions very quickly.

Nice article, Max. I'm glad you mentioned Bioware & Mass Effect. This developer is really taking the female role in gaming to the next level in my opinion. I was just watching the latest video posted on masseffect.com (the official site for ME3) and there's a brief clip of Shepard having an impromptu boxing match with one of the new characters. It'll be cool to see FemShep mixing it up hand-to-hand with a fellow soldier on the Normandy, and it's just another example of Bioware breaking free from norms.

I mostly agree. I thoroughly enjoyed leveling my BH to level 50, Bioware delivered on story there is no question about it. But when I hit 50, something wasn't right. It felt like the curtain closed and all that was standing there was the same old MMO grind that I have been trying to escape for a long while.

In my opinion Bioware does a sub-par job of trying to build a solid PVP community as well. The game promotes a selfish play style which in turn attracts the very same people I have been trying my hardest to avoid. I would love to see server boons, or access to certain instances ( a la Darkness Falls or Wintergrasp) for gaining control of Ilum. But as it stands though the only reason to participate in PVP is to climb the PVP gear ladder, and the only buff from Ilum is to make the grind for your gear faster.

Now don't get me wrong I did enjoyed PVP at times. The structured PVP was alright, Huttball is great. But that kind of instanced PVP in my opinion is filler to the real PVP which is....err...should be Ilum. However I understand that with my hatred for expertise and tier gear, I am in the minority. Bioware is clearly catering towards a World of Warcraft type gamer who is used to and accepts these things. The game is so far doing great and I have no doubt that this game will continue to see its player base rise. I am just a bit saddened with my delusions of grandeur because I had really hoped for more.

Whether it show actual gameplay or if its just a visual trailer, trailers like "Deceived" demonstrate what a player should expect in the game. As I stated before the trailer clearly shows the different abilities of the different classes present in the battle, which is a good representation of the actual abilities you can use as those classes. But its near impossible to participate in a battle such as that one on any planet other than Ilum, and as I stated in the article, the performance on Ilum makes it near impossible to play.

I'm not saying the visual quality should equal the in game quality. What I'm saying is that the trailer does not demonstrate how what world PvP is like. There's no question BioWare showed the different abilities in the classes to demonstrate how they would act in the game (Operatives using cover, Bounty Hunter uses "Death from Above", Malgus force leaping towards Ven Zallow, etc) But that type of world PvP does not exist. No one asks a company to put out trailers, they put them out to show players what their game is going to be like. Trailers like that don't just serve as eye candy but as a window to what to expect in their game, and the world PvP is simply not like that.

Does a non-gameplay cinematic really promise amazing PvP? That seems a bit dramatic. To keep asking developers to provide us with beautiful five-minute-long cinematic trailers, then spitting on them when the game isn't exactly like that is getting old. Not that your other points aren't relevant. I'm just sick of the "it's not like the trailer" argument. If it's a gameplay trailer, you can tell. The visual quality difference is pretty obvious.

Great article, another good place to visit would be Pandora. You can steal and plunder all you want. Or just go hunting for some large skag. Raccoon city would be farther up on my list.
